Today, international business people increasingly find themselves working in multicultural environments, encountering differences in everything from communication styles to time perception to business etiquette to conflicting values. What is easy and intuitive within one's own culture can be clumsy, ineffective, or even offensive in another.
Heightened awareness of the importance of culture and of the skills that promote understanding between colleagues and business partners from different countries has thus become a prerequisite for doing business successfully in any global environment. Cultural intelligence - the ability to adapt successfully to different cultural settings - can not only help to avoid intercultural misunderstandings, but clearly is a source of competitive advantage for individuals and organizations. By recognizing, understanding and successfully handling cross-cultural differences in the global workplace, cultural intelligence allows you to manage effectively across cultures.

Several years Russian paint market is growing and this grow will continue for nearest 4-5 years. In the 2007 for the first time during recent 15 years market capacity exceeded 1 million tones. The demand on paints partly fulfilled by import that reach 25-30 % from total consuming capacity. Near 70% from import are primers, fillers and façade paints. Today we see the strong trend to grow the consumption of industrial coatings. The average growth rates of consumption of industrial coatings are 3% per year and in 2010 the demand could grow till 100 - 120 thousand tones per year.
Production pattern isn't optimal. The Central part of Russia and the region near river Volga are very saturated with paint producers. From the other hand the Ural region, Far East and Siberia have great demand in industrial coatings as a lot of petrochemical oil-and-gas production enterprises are situated in those regions.
Obviously the building in those regions the new plant would be rather successful.
But to organize new production unit isn't easy. For foreign companies the difficulties are duplicate. They are start from the very beginning - negotiations. The majority of Russian authorities can't speak any foreign language so foreign company should spend money for translator. The administration barriers are the same for Russians and foreigners but Russians know how to run them. So you should have Russian person who would help with authorities. Another trouble is staff. Now in Russia we have deficit of professional people - engineers, technicians and skilled workers. You should educate your employers. Logistic, customs, absence of harmonization of national and European standards this is not the full list of difficulties that will happen on each step. And last but not least. If you would decide to start your business in Russia what way: to make joint venture with Russian company, to buy old Russian factory and rebuild it or to build new plant - you would choose. These questions would be discussed.

The world is changing rapidly. IT and information technologies are developing and spreading around at enormous pace. Manufacturing industries are moving into new locations. The standard of living is increasing in many countries changing the traditional economic balance. The paint industry is consolidating. The structure of distribution and the decision making of end users is changing. The requirement for continuous development provides plenty of growth opportunities for companies. The world is 'getting smaller'.
The spectrum of competition ranges from highly competitive markets to oligopolistic situations. But the competition is hard everywhere. Those companies who best understand the market needs, who best manage their own team of people and provide the most innovative solutions to the market will gain position. Customers will require increasingly personalised solutions and service related to decoration and painting. Companies must try to tempt end users through personalised marketing. The winners will move outside the traditional price driven market segments and will grow through innovations. |

In the coatings industry , the surfaces are normally expected to exhibit certain optical, mechanical and chemical properties. These surface properties are static and degredation with time is unavoidable. Nano-engineered and nanostructured coatings provide the chance to control and manage the surface characteristics. Switchable and dynamic nano coatings will have a big impact on the shaping of our coatings industry in the coming decade.
When coatings are designed and assembled at the molecular level, the amazing size-dependent behaviour gives us the opportunity to develop novel functionalities. Enermous changes are observed when semiconducting and conducting materials used at the nanometric scale exhibiting very active and responsive characteristics. Surface engineering with nanotechnology provides the way to introduce electrical, optical, magnetic, thermal and mechanical functionalities. New bottom-up production techniques for coatings ensure to keep and well distrubute inorganic-organic nanoparticles with covalent bonds in three dimensional network.
Self healing, self cleaning, photoswitchable, energy, light storing coatings will give us a unique chance to provide higher added value to our coatings industry in 21 st century.
