Waterborne polysiloxaneurethane urea shows potential as antifouling

Since TBT is banned in many countries the paint industry has focused on developing tin-free products that are able to replace the TBT-based ones. A new study investigates the antifouling property ofcoatings based on waterborne polysiloxane–urethane– urea.
A study performed by researchers from the Advances Ship Engineering Research Center from Pusan National University, Republic of Korea investigated the antifouling property of coatings based on waterborne polysiloxaneurethane urea (WBPSUU). WBPSUU were prepared through a prepolymer process using siloxane polyol, namely polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyether polyol, namely poly(tetramethyleneoxide glycol) (PTMG) as the soft segments. The goal of this study was to explore the potential use of polysiloxaneurethaneurea in marine coatings in order to boost the flexibility, adhesion, erosion, and foul-release property with respect to PDMS/PTMG ratio (PDMS wt%). After 90 days the lowest fouled area (5%) was observed in the sample using WBPSUU4 (PDMS 15.76 wt%) among all of the samples. The study has been published in Journal of Coatings Technology and Research, Volume 8, Number 3, pp 389-399.
