Sustainable flame retardants put into focus

An overview of current regulatory activities with relevance for flame retardants, like REACH, will be given at the European Coatings Conference "Fire retardant coatings” on 13 and 14 March, 2012, in Berlin.

The environmental behaviour of flame retardants has been studied for more than 20 years. Over the last 10 years the scientific and public debate has led to some regulatory restrictions on flame retardants, mostly for chlorinated or brominated compounds (e.g. RoHS and WEEE directives in Europe). At the European Coatings Conference "Fire retardant coatings” (13/14 March, 2012, Berlin), Dr. Adrian Beard, Pinfa (non-halogenated phosphorus, inorganic and nitrogen flame retardants association), will give an overview of current regulatory activities with relevance for flame retardants like REACH. The new Construction Products Regulation has taken sustainability criteria into account. Non-regulatory drivers in the market like ecolabels and Green Public Procurement come into play, too. Projects related to the environmental assessment of alternative flame retardants, like the design for environment projects of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the European research project ENFIRO, which studies the environmental and toxicity profile of flame retardants in a prototypical case study, will also be presented.
