Modern plastic coatings still bear numerous challenges for formulators, in particular when it comes to soft-touch coatings which find their application essentially in automotive interiors and electronic appliances. State of the art coatings are made of 2 pack waterborne polyurethane (PU) coatings which are in particular required in automotive OEM. These coatings have to withstand various solicitations under severe conditions, while exhibiting pleasant touch and good optical aspect. In a presentation, Dr. Rolf Klucker will present latest results studying the influence of different types of aliphatic polyisocyanate hardeners and their degree of hydrophilicity on the essential requirements for these coatings. The results for representative formulations show for comparable formulations a dependency of the resistances on the specific binder/hardener combination and the type of applied stress. The paper will be presented at the "European coatings symposium - modern coatings for plastics" on 29 October, 2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
