Acrylic and polyester chemistries to combine
Tuesday, 27 September 2011
A paper shows how the combination of acrylic chemistry and esterification reactions can provide convenient solutions to master the regulation challenges for automotive coatings.
New VOC regulations for automotive repair clearcoats have prompted acrylic polyols producers to reduce the viscosity and the molecular weight of their solventborne resins. Alternatively, resins for waterborne clearcoats are also being developed. In both cases, the conventional radical polymerisation processes have been modified to meet regulation and performance requirements. The combination of acrylic chemistry (radical polymerisation) and esterification reactions provides very convenient solutions to master these challenges. How this is possible will be shown by Denis Heymans from Momentive Specialty Chemicals, in his presentation at the European Coatings Conference "Automotive Coatings" on 24-25 November in Berlin, Germany.
