There are several polymers that may be used with or without modifications and with or without additional impermeable products for Waterproofing. Bitumens, asphalts and similar tar-based compositions are one such set of polymers. However, when used alone they have limitations plus they are not suitable for exterior applications due to their poor resistance to UV. They are also black in colour.
Some types of tar modification may be used in conjunction with moisture-cure polyurethane prepolymers as waterproofing compounds, again by themselves or in conjunction with impermeable membranes. They may be suitable as waterproofing compounds in basements, construction foundations and similar applications.
Acrylics, by themselves may not provide high degree of waterproofing. But when used in conjunction with Cement, they have proven to be made into suitable waterproofing compounds.
Styrene Butadiene is another polymer, more elastomeric than acrylics, that again in conjunction with cement are made into suitable waterproofing membranes.
Use of Waterproofing compounds with or without additional impermeable membranes is site and situation specific. One may not be able to generalise any particular polymeric system for waterproofing. Manufacturers, therefore offer several alternative polymeric waterproofing compounds as a range.
Should you desire more specific discussions or additional information, please do contact me off-line. However, please ensure a descriptive introduction of yourself and that of your organization.
Best wishes,
