Coating-free substrates might be applicable in more than low-quality and/or low budget areas in the future. No additional production step and of course less material costs seem to be the basis for these developments which would not only reduce the number of coating layers - they are meant to substitute them totally. For sure this would be much cheaper.

What distinguishes synthetic from natural surfaces? A spontaneous answer could surely be: synthetic surfaces are more resistant. That is why they have been developed.
